BJJ Black Belt, Pancrase Grappling Champ and MMA Fighter Andy Wang on Carson's Corner!
5-07-2009
Denver, CO

Joining us today on Carson's Corner is noted fighter Andy Wang, fresh off a big win and getting ready for perhaps the most important fight of his career to date. Bob sat down with Andy and learned what he's been up to since his days as a contestant on season five of The Ultimate Fighter.

Tune in to hear Andy Wang revisit his stint on the show and some of the issues which arose from it: refusing to take fights to the ground, being kicked off BJ Penn's team, and his emotional breakdown after being defeated. Andy also very candidly discusses the way fans reacted to his brawling style, including his thoughts on the phrase "Stand and Wang" being used to describe groundfighters who try to strike instead of using their submission skills.

There's more to Andy than his appearance on TUF, though, and he looks to move forward and continue his winning ways with an upcoming battle against skilled thaiboxer Kit Cope in the "WarGods" promotion. Will Andy promise to try and take Kit to the ground? Click the link below to find out!

After the interview, Bob analyzes the latest hijinks from around the world of MMA and combat sports, including Don Frye's latest victory, Jose Canseco fighting the Techno Goliath Hong-Man Choi and a shoutout to fans from the UK. Don't miss it!

RING OF FIRE - Robinson-Morrison fight scrapped

4-10-2009

Broomfield, CO

KID Robinson is out of the Main event match with Anthony Morrison due to a broken arm.

Robinson suffered a broken arm training with former ROF Champion Christian Allen. Allen kicked Robinson in the arm during a recent sparring session. Robinson blocked the kick with his forearm. Robinson felt immediate pain but thought it was just a "good shot".

The pain increased over the weekend, and prompted Robinson to go see his Doctor this week. The Doctor confirmed his worst fears, that he had broken his arm.

"First off I want to say sorry to Anthony because I know he had trained his butt off for this fight. I had the best training camp of my life for this fight. Training with Trevor Wittman and the team out of T'sko has turned me into a different fighter. I have never had this kind of training or a team of guys that have helped me like this before. Royce Gracie even flew in for a couple of days to help me. Ultimately I am very disappointed and heartbroken that I am unable to fight April 11th in my hometown. Colorado has some of the best and most loyal fans I have ever fought in front of. I want to thank everyone has continued to support me through all the good and bad times I have gone through in my career. All I can say is this journey isn't over, its only beginning. I will be back and better then ever. I also want to thank Sven Bean, Trevor Wittman, Leister Bowling, Griff, Amal Easton and everyone who helped me train for this fight."

The promotion could not secure a qualified opponent for Morrison, so the bout was scratched.

The Mike Nickels - James Funny fight at Light Heavy Weight will now be the main event.

RING OF FIRE 34: JUDGMENT DAY

3-26-2009

Broomfield, CO

TAPOUT, KBPI 106.7 and TRAINING DAY present:

RING OF FIRE 34: JUDGMENT DAY!!. The 13 bout MMA event will take place on Saturday, April 11th,2009 at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

MAIN EVENT:
In the main event bout of the evening, UFC veteran Alvin KID Robinson returns to Colorado for the first time in two years.
A four time UFC veteran, Robinson is known as one of the slickest ground fighters in the sport. His biggest career victory came when he defeated Jorge Gurgel at UFC 77 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Robinson holds the rank of Black Belt under the legendary Royce Gracie and is also a former All American wrestler. He won and defended the ROF Light Weight Championship three times. Robinson was sidelined during training for ROF 33, but is now injury free and ready to get back in the cage.

"On April 11th I make my return to 145lbs division. The 145lbs division is stacked and I can't wait to fight the best."

"Its honor to be fighting on Ring of Fire again, the show that started my career. I also can't wait to fight in front of my hometown crowd here in Colorado. The fans here are very loyal and supportive and I plan on putting on a great fight for them. I have big plans for 2009 and they all start at Ring Of Fire 34. I feel great! I'm 100% healthy and ready to go."

Robinson's opponent, Anthony Morrison was raised in the rough streets of Philadelphia, PA. Morrison has literally fought for a better way of life. He is a powerful fighter that started his career training out of his grandmother's basement, literally. Morrison has been training with Team Combat for the past year (the camp that brought up Amir Sadollah) to improve his game. Anthony is moving down from 155lbs to 145lbs. He feels at that weight, he will be a handful for any opponent.

"Alvin is tough opponent and I'm stepping into his back yard for this fight... I like being the underdog and I think the pressure is on him. This fight means a lot to me and I have faced tough opponents like Alvin before. I am going to prove to myself and everyone that I belong here. I don't think Alvin will want to stand with me so I'm obviously gonna try keep him where he is not comfortable. If it stays on the feet I will KO him. If it goes to the ground I'm looking to pound him out. I am very excited to fight with Ring Of Fire! Some of the best fighters in the country have come up through this promotion..and to the ROF fans ..I wont disappoint!!.

FEATURE BOUTS:
In the main feature bout of the evening UFC veteran BIG Mike Nickels returns to the cage.
Nickels is a BJJ stylist with a 6-2 record and was featured on season 3 of Spike TV's Ultimate Fighter. BIG Mike was last seen in action at ROF 32, where he displayed text book technique in finishing Serbian boxer Vladimir Vuckovic early in the first round.

At ROF 34, Nickels will face the top up and coming light heavyweight in the region, James Funny. Funny has a very impressive 10-2 MMA record. He is known for both his KO power as well as brute strength on the mat. Funny is looking for a win over the UFC vet to launch his career.

The undercard is stacked as UFC vet Luke LIL HULK Caudillo returns to action against Army Combatives instructor Josh Arocho. The 145 lb Young Guns belt will be on the line as Tyler THUNDER Toner takes on the 4-2 Dee Jay Fuentes of Matt Hughes HIT Squad camp. Fabian The FREAK Acuna makes his long awaited return as he squares up against K-1 and Contender Asia star James Martinez.. Undefeated Heavyweight and Golden Gloves Champion Brendan Schaub looks to go 5-0, but standing in his way is Montengro MMA Champion Bojan Spalevic. In a battle of brawlers fan favorite Kenneth Seegrist will clash with Ed Banks to open the main card portion of the evening.

There will be six preliminary matches starting at 6:30, highlighted by Cody Frederickson of Jackson's MMA taking on Easton BJJ's Chandler Holderness. The remaining bouts feature some of the most promising young fighters on the circuit.

RING OF FIRE 33: ADRENALINE!!

12-28-2008

Broomfield, CO

Promoter Sven BOOGIE Bean is happy to announce the promotion's next installment RING OF FIRE 33: ADRENALINE!!.

The 12 bout MMA event will take place on Saturday, January 10th,2009 at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado.

MAIN EVENT:
In the main event bout of the evening, UFC veteran Alvin KID Robinson returns to Colorado for the first time in nearly two years.
A four time UFC veteran, Robinson is known as one of the slickest ground fighters in the sport. He made his UFC debut against The Ultimate Fighter's Kenny Florian in July of 2007. His biggest career victory came when he defeated Jorge Gurgel at UFC 77 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Robinson holds the rank of Black Belt under the legendary Royce Gracie and is also a former All American wrestler. He won and defended the ROF Light Weight Championship three times and is now setting his sights on a career in the Feather Weight division.

"My natural walk around weight is in the high 150's low 160's. That was fine for a while but the guys in the weight class now are cutting from 180. Skill wise I was fine, but in MMA that's a lot of weight to give up. After my last fight we decided it was best to drop down to 145 and make a run for it there." said Robinson

"I have fought before at 145 and the cut wasn't a problem at all. There are so many top level guys at that weight that I feel I match up well with. Faber. Pulver. Brown. The division is so stacked. And with the WEC giving the guys a place to shine on TV, it's exciting. I can't wait to get back in the hunt."

But first Robinson has to get a win at ROF 33. No small task considering his opponent.

Keith Bach has an impressive 8-1 MMA record. He is also the current US Army Combative Flyweight Champion. Bach is a BJJ stylist and 5 of his 7 wins have come by way of submission. Out of those 5 wins only one fight has made it past the first round. Bach is a 2 time veteran of the "GI vs. PRO" MMA series produced by the Art Of War promotion. Being active duty military, Bach is a disciplined and well conditioned athlete. He has fought on big events in front of big crowds. He will not be intimidated by coming into Robinson's home town. Bach is excited at the chance to fight someone of Robinson's caliber. And like his opponent, he understands that a win at ROF 33 could very well lead to a shot a WEC greatness.

FEATURE BOUTS:
The fight card is stacked with talent from the top to bottom and will feature four title matches. ROF Bantam Weight Champion Joe Doherty will make his first title defense against Ultimate Fighter season 5 veteran Noah Thomas.
Fan favorite and ROF Welterweight Young Gun Champion Brandon RUCKUS Thatch will defend his belt against Ultimate Combat veteran Mike Arrant of Salt Lake City, UT.

RING OF FIRE has long been a proponent of women's mma and that tradition continues with ROF 33. But this time there will be a title on the line. Number one ranked female fighter, Cat Albert will face California's Angela Samaro for the first ever ROF Womens Young Gun Championship. Albert is known as one of the toughest women fighters in the industry with only one blemish on her record. Albert's one loss is to Louise Johnson back in 2007. A point not missed by her opponent, as Samaro choked Johnson unconcious when the two met the same year

Other notable fighters will be veterans Tyler THUNDER Toner, Jamie Schmidt, Justin Salas, Brian Wood , and former professional football player Brendan Schaub.

There will be five preliminary matches starting at 6:30, featuring some of the most promising debut fighters to appear on the promotion. US National Freestyle Champion and 4X US Nat'l Freestyle All-American Ramico Blackmon will make his MMA debut at 170 lbs. Rocky Mountain Body Building Champion, Chris Williamson will enter the cage for the first time at 185 lbs. And at Heavyweight, Pita Tua, will finally make his debut. Fans will want to keep a close eye on this guy as he comes from fighting stock. Pita has both Heavyweight Boxer David Tua and K-1 fighter Mou "Mighty Mo" Siligia in his family tree.

Denver's Ludwig bests Edwards, talks future..
11-26-2008

Denver, CO

Stepping in on short notice, Duane "Bang" Ludwig made the most of his opportunity by picking up a unanimous decision win over Yves Edwards in a catch weight fight.

Edwards got control early in the fight with a takedown while working to pass Ludwig's guard, and stayed there for the biggest part of the first round making his opponent work off his back.

The 2nd round saw Ludwig gain momentum with some good strikes that seem to put Edwards off balance, while he tried to take the fight back to the ground to avoid the strength of Ludwig's stand-up game.

When the final round began it looked as if Edwards was starting to wear out a bit as Ludwig became the aggressor eventually scoring a takedown of his own, going for strikes and starting to control the pace of the fight. When it was all over, Ludwig got the win, as Edwards seemed a bit despondent with the decision.

"It's not about me fighting people, I don't care about titles or fighting certain people, but I do need to find someone that wakes me up," Ludwig said after the win. "Yves Edwards scared me, he's a tough sucker, it woke me up."

When asked what's up next for him Ludwig replied "I don't really know, I'll leave that up to my manager. I'm going to take a little time off for Thanksgiving, gain some weight, and then get right back in the gym. This is my job. this is what I do to pay the bills so training is like going to work. I am lucky to be able to do what I love as a job."

"I don't really care who I fight next, as long as it is someone who motivates me. Someone who will get in my head and keep me focused and sharp. I wouldn't mind fighting again in Japan. We always have fun over there. But wherever, it doesn't matter. It is really who that matters more then where." Ludwig added.

"I want to thank my wife Jessica, my manager Boogie, and all my team mates for helping me get ready. I also had some really good support from sponsors on this fight which helped a lot. Sponsors are so important to us as fighters, really they are the ones that take care of us between the fights."

"I want to tell my fans thanks for the support as always. I hope I showed that I am still getting better and better with each fight, and that I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. A little turkey, some pumpkin pie, and then it's back to the gym. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!"

"Oh yeah.. Christmas is coming, go buy some Duane Bang gear!"
